With a little bit of time on my hands, I had the treat of an opportunity to play Carnage & Glory II, my preferred rule set. Accordingly I threw together some not particularly historical OBs for an 1809 clash between two small French and Austrian forces. The Austrians were tasked with defending, loosely centred around the two pieces of high ground that flanked an imaginary road running across the field. The French were to drive the Austrians off and capture those features. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
French OB:</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>The centre. Valory had brought up his fresh regiment, the divisional reserve, to menace the exhausted Austrians and outflank the Jaegers in the woods. <b>The right flank. Bloodied French Cuirassiers take stock and attempt to reform as the division reels from the loss of its commander. <b> Without doubt the MVPs of the engagement were the Jaegers, who held on with aplomb, despite starting with only 550 effectives, they drove off and kept at bay the 93e Line (1,450 strong), and were only forced to evacuate their position by the situation along the rest of the Austrian line, and with both their flanks turned.</b></div>

<b>The butcher's bill. Sadly I accidentally clicked on a stage too far and was unable to see the breakdown of losses at the 'current' stage before pressing end battle to process final results. <div style="text-align: center;">
<b>The stats here don't quite tell the whole story, the Austrian loss of 94% of their cavalry included a huge number of missing from that brigade, as from memory they lost around 120 to combat and artillery and twenty prisoners before being dispersed en masse. </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
An extremely fun game and confirms C&G as my favourite rules for the period. It might not come across but a French victory was not always on the cards, they lost the initiative after an hour due to soaring levels of fatigue, and were fortunate to wrest it back again 45 minutes later, as they took the risk of pushing on hard. It paid off, as heavy Austrian losses caused their morale to dive, just in time to secure victory because the French infantry was grinding to a halt from the effort. However things might have been different if the Austrian cavalry had put in a better showing, after all the Jaegers and Landwehr showed what could be achieved - the former repelling two battalions (albeit they were struggling with the terrain), and the latter absolutely smashing the Legere with close range musketry. Time was called as the Austrian position in the centre was essentially compromised despite having several uncommitted battalions and the French would likely have rested and reorganised for a period whilst employing artillery and skirmishers against the remaining defenders. The position would definitely have been cleared and the Austrians running the risk of being slaughtered by the waiting French cavalry. </div>

Here is my promised update, the (nearly) finished Baden Brigade from Legrand's 1er Division of Massena's IV Corps d'Armée. IR Nr 1 'Grossherzog' and IR Nr 2 'Erbgrossherzog', aided and abetted by the Lingg Jaeger Battalion and a Baden Foot Artillery Battery. Casualty markers and accompanying officer as standard. Oh and a couple of extra regiments of Cuirassiers. Sadly I don't have my paints on me to do the edges of the bases at the moment, and I could have sworn that I had Baden infantry flags ready to go but it appears I can't find them or I am mistaken. I beg your indulgence on these points. I'm quite fond of the Baden contingent and they have the privilege of being the first infantry figures from my entire collection to ever be based. I hope you enjoy them, and a Merry Christmas to you all.</div>

Mostly Austrians, but a few other odds and ends as well. I noticed that none of the Austrian cavalry had had their horses painted, which was fairly demoralising. For the purposes of basing them up I have at least put their base colours on. </div>

Finally a couple of units of Austrian Kurassiers. Again, horses to be finished at some unknown future date. Like most of the Austrians painted before this year they have been painted with proper shades of white as opposed to the current generation with their adjusted uniform shade. </div>

Some casualty markers and six units of Austrian German infantry. Moved on to three more units of French line infantry in greatcoats. My speed painting techniques are working, these didn't take as long as previous units, and I'm now happy with the shade I'm using for the uniforms. Not painting everything bright white makes it less of a slog too. On a totally separate note, I've finally got a copy of Carnage & Glory II and I absolutely love it. </div>

A few things that are on the desk at the moment. In fact the Austrian infantry has been completed since these were taken, and I will be using the duller uniform shade for Austrian uniforms from now on, it looks much better than head to toe flat white. </div>

Finished two Austrian Dragoon Regiments, Nr. 3 'Knesevich' and Nr. 6 'Riesch.' For Aspern-Essling I should have done Nr. 1 and Nr. 6 brigaded together but I didn't fancy doing black facings. I also painted a small group of Carneville Freikorps Hussars. I realise that I've put too much on the bases again but I wanted to use some new MinNatur bits and pieces. I apologise of the quality of the photos also, I really did bother to highlight the horses, not that it shows. Next I'm going to do some Austrian casualty markers, before rotating back on to units. I've got French heavy cavalry, Guard light cavalry, Saxon heavy cavalry, Baden, French and Austrian infantry as well as assorted gun batteries and command bases waiting to go. If anyone has any preferences as to what they'd like me to paint next let me know!</div>

Just a quick progress update. I thought I'd include the other unit for contrast, showing how they start off with blocked in base colours next to how they end up. The next time I post these will be when they're all finished and based. </div>

A little progress shot of Dragoon Regiment Nr. 6 'Riesch.' I've used them as a way to experiment with doing Austrian uniforms a different shade, as all pristine white is a look I'm not so fond off, and even the white-greys etc that I have don't really provide enough contrast, particularly on the infantry. Pleased with these, but I think the top highlight actually ended up almost being another layer not a highlight, thus nearly defeating the purpose of the exercise!</div>

I ordered a mixture of French command packs and a few others in order to begin the creation of something I've wanted to do for a long time - Napoleon himself. It'll take the form of a very large command base, normally anything larger than a division commander's base gets a slight diorama treatment, but this one will be an all singing all dancing diorama. Unfortunately, the base I ordered for it hasn't arrived, so here are a few of the other personalities in the meantime; ending with a teaser for the main event. </div>

l'Empereur! Not all the places are quite finalised yet, and won't be until they're arranged on the base. The pickets are slightly out of shot. Hot on the heels of the first batch of Napoleonics to ever be completely finished, a load of French cavalry and some more horse artillery about to enter the scenic phase.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-piGguxFq8b0/VoEbQGu_h1I/AAAAAAAAAW0/L6v0DC8DdgI/s1600/IMG_4419.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-piGguxFq8b0/VoEbQGu_h1I/AAAAAAAAAW0/L6v0DC8DdgI/s400/IMG_4419.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>

Lessons learned though; less is more. I knew this, but went a bit berserk and used everything in my collection of basing materials and had to tone a few back. But actually some that I thought were too much have since grown on me. The only major delay was discovering the number of horses that I couldn't be bothered to paint at the time. Painting dozens of varied horses in retrospect is not all that fun! So I've got a bit lazy with highlights, it should be fairly evident which. Hope everyone is enjoying a relaxed Christmas and New Year.<br />

Gradually getting through more and more white-coated infantry. Usually I only do a battalion at a time, but I ended up doing two German battalions at the same time, and actually it didn't feel like it took that much longer. It was also more satisfying at the end because I'd double the output! </div>

White is a terrible colour to have to paint, especially en masse. On the bright side, Hungarians with blue trousers halve the pain, as does giving Saxon infantry alternate trousers. I've also found it helps to rotate between painting different things; a few units of cavalry, then some infantry, a battery of artillery etc. And then within those categories too, so for example a few battalions of white-coated foot, then some lights or others that are in different colours or - as will become apparent - from Saxons to Hungarians.<br />

<span style="text-align: center;">Obschelwitz Battalion and Tirailleurs d'Egidy. In both cases I have largely pleased myself with their uniforms as I could find little to nothing to inform me. The lights were based on Hessians and others, I went for red facings. The line were just imagination. </span></div>

I've had a little bit of time, so I have powered through three Austrian gun batteries, some French cuirassiers, and a variety of brigade and regimental personalities. On the workbench are the Austrian overall command base, a division command, and a variety of other bits and pieces. I may also lose interest and/or skip around to some French line infantry or Austrian Jaegers. Increasingly I find I don't have the patience and am conscious of time ticking on to paint intricate highlights on every last miniature, so I have simplified the way I go about my business. It's a shame, but I'll never get through them all otherwise. A quick comparison between miniatures painted (intermittently) in the last 18 months and those painted way back when I began painting AB Napoleonics makes it pretty obvious.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
At the back an Austrian 6pdr Brigade Battery, front left (from this perspective) a 12pdr Position Battery, and a 6pdr Position Battery next to it. I will go back and highlight the guns and gun carriages at some point, the yellow here is very garish.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As always with these blogs (it seems to me) I am inclined to open with an apology as to my absence due to real life etc etc… although that is again true. However, I've had a week off to organise my life, and I've indulged myself in getting back to some serious painting. Once again, it's been like re-learning the process, unearthing the knowledge and so on but it's been increasingly pleasurable to do so. I know the last post was about 20mm Modern, but I've felt a pang to return to my first love, so here are some of the results of that. A regiment of Legere and some chasseurs en tirailleur, plus some French and Saxon casualty/status markers. As per normal, basing has been neglected in favour of getting the painting out of the way, and because basing is my least favourite activity. Next on the table is a three battalion Ligne regiment, but don't bet on that actually being the next thing I paint. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H6rjGDvRD0w/VRRc0J2uciI/AAAAAAAAANg/C5okIQyyZxk/s1600/IMG_1633.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H6rjGDvRD0w/VRRc0J2uciI/AAAAAAAAANg/C5okIQyyZxk/s1600/IMG_1633.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The latest Legere in their finished glory…maybe the 26e? Why not. I had fun doing some variations in epaulettes/plumes/distinctions on the elite companies, and made a conscious choice for the voltigeurs to have busbies as their regimental affectation, because why not?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QOzIOXecaMQ/VRRdBxHIE2I/AAAAAAAAAOA/90Lt_eQx0t4/s1600/IMG_1637.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QOzIOXecaMQ/VRRdBxHIE2I/AAAAAAAAAOA/90Lt_eQx0t4/s1600/IMG_1637.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
More of the same. I also gave each battalion's chasseurs different pom poms just for some variation, rather than doing individual company pom poms for each. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0TeaQPqsNjA/VRRc5unBznI/AAAAAAAAANo/rwkqwGQNfv0/s1600/IMG_1634.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0TeaQPqsNjA/VRRc5unBznI/AAAAAAAAANo/rwkqwGQNfv0/s1600/IMG_1634.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Saxon casualty/status markers. Those freshly based Austrian guns in the background will perhaps be the cause of these being employed on the tabletop one day! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ogf9ardX3K0/VRRc6VtNI6I/AAAAAAAAANs/3JK2B52sDvY/s1600/IMG_1635.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ogf9ardX3K0/VRRc6VtNI6I/AAAAAAAAANs/3JK2B52sDvY/s1600/IMG_1635.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
French version of the same. I didn't do cheesy blood on many of the figures, although the chap in the brown trousers on the right I did take the time to do some splatter for; not that it can be discerned very well here.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Y3bvypHnWvQ/VRRc-kM9j1I/AAAAAAAAAN4/vwKwVNCR3z8/s1600/IMG_1636.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Y3bvypHnWvQ/VRRc-kM9j1I/AAAAAAAAAN4/vwKwVNCR3z8/s1600/IMG_1636.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The final French casualty markers (for now as there are others including cavalry versions). A mixture of modern AFVs in the background - perhaps the fusilier on his knees is clapping his hand to his head in astonishment!</div>

I have actually finished the 2003 US Infantry Platoon in desert fatigues, but packed them away without photographing them (d'oh) as they're being moved to a new location. I threw in a bit of variation in terms of the odd figure having DPM helmet covers or pieces of clothing. As soon as I can I'll put the US infantry up, including the HUMINT team in post 2003 ACU uniforms. In the meantime, here are some of the Republican Guard figures I completed, along with helicopter pilots/crew in ACU.<br />

Naturally at the end of 2014 I was seduced by a brand new project. I am still a massive fan of Empress Miniatures' 28mm Modern figures having purchased the entire British range, however I came across Elheim's 20mm Modern range and new I had to have some… In addition to which I acquired a wealth of 1/72 vehicles and helos from a variety of manufacturers to support this latest rush of blood to the head. At the moment I am putting together 2003 era US Army with Bradley IFV, M113 APC and M1A1 Abrams to support. Ranged against them are Iraqi regulars/RG and Fedayeen backed by BMP-1, T-55, and T-72 AFVs. I'm also working on 2003 USMC and SF groups. In the pipeline I have a load of insurgent figures for post 2003 IZ and AFPAK, and US Army and USMC in 2004 - 2011 uniforms. There are also quite a few CH-47, CH-46, and UH variant kits knocking about the place. For now, here are my initial attempts at different camouflage, as I'm learning by doing on this era. My 18mm Napoleonics have not been forgotten, and will be getting some love in 2015. </div>

<br />
Elheim US Army in IBA, with undercoated AFVs in the background. This shows the stages that they go through to become the finished product. In order to facilitate that, I am also <i>not</i>, repeat not, doing laters of highlights, on the camouflage and equipment, it's mostly one tone stuff.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-597B69bkAdc/VKj72W3A61I/AAAAAAAAAMc/w-EvEWNs7SQ/s1600/IMG_1410.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-597B69bkAdc/VKj72W3A61I/AAAAAAAAAMc/w-EvEWNs7SQ/s1600/IMG_1410.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
And here is the more or less finished product, but not based. I was reasonably pleased with the results!</div>
<div>

<div>
And later on after I'd chocolate chipped my way through the other colours. Important lessons were learned from doing this team, which will hopefully assist me in completing the others.</div>

I was fortunate enough to find the time to have quick game of Empire V before I depart. Unfortunately none of the miniatures are based, and I had to use some that were only undercoated or even bare metal, but it was still a good time. In a relatively restricted space, we played out two hours of fighting, which was enough to reach a reasonable conclusion after the French cleared the orchard and captured the farm. Casualties were relatively even until the closing stages when a desperate Austrian cavalry attack overran multiple French guns and a line infantry battalion only to be crushed by the countercharges. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
56e Ligne captures the farm and tries to drive the 2nd Bn/Nr. 13 Wallachich Illyrian Grenz back in a firefight that went on for over an hour. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mlNIIhrOmK8/U4xLul02IJI/AAAAAAAAAK4/VzWiSKZvelY/s1600/IMG_1309.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mlNIIhrOmK8/U4xLul02IJI/AAAAAAAAAK4/VzWiSKZvelY/s1600/IMG_1309.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The Young Guard stands ready in reserve in the centre. They did nothing, but they did form squares when the distant Nr.3 Erzherzog Ferdinand Hussars grew tired of being bombarded and overran 4th Division's artillery despite heavy casualties. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Nf1DEZ8r2eM/U4xKEVxc55I/AAAAAAAAAKo/NPeEKq3bYfU/s1600/IMG_1311.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Nf1DEZ8r2eM/U4xKEVxc55I/AAAAAAAAAKo/NPeEKq3bYfU/s1600/IMG_1311.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
General de Division Boudet directs the movement of his infantry as the supporting brigades move up towards the orchard/wood. The blurry 3e Legere on the right suffered heavily in multiple attacks on a determined Nr. 1 Jaeger Battalion lining the edge of the trees. The supporting 2e Ligne outflanked the position, its 1er Bn covering itself in glory, routing Jaegers, Landwehr and then clearing the wood by driving out some Grenz in a firefight. General de Brigade Fririon certainly earned some laurels at the head of the battalion, and suffered a minor wound in the closing stages. </div>

The worst is that I'm about to go away for six months, and will have no access to my many miniatures staunchly awaiting their uniforms and grassy pedestals. I'll have to re-learn how to paint all over again! Still, I did manage a little burst early in the year, so here's a little evidence of that, which I hope you enjoy. All figures by AB miniatures.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Two of what will be eight Grenadier Battalions. They are specific, I just can't remember which! Let's say Scovaud and Puteani from Merville's Brigade, why not. Nr .3 Erzherzog Ferrdinand Hussars to the rear. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Nr. 13 Wallach-Illyrian Grenz, Nr. 2 Mahr Freiwilliger Battalion (in a Vienna Woods scheme, because I preferred a bit of brown and red to more white and grey), Nr. 4 Vincent Chevaulegers, Nr. 1 Kaiser and Nr. 6 Liechtenstein Kurassiers. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
The Young Guard Tirailleur-Grenadiers and Tirailleur-Voltigeurs with skirmishers to the fore, commanders swirling around, and the IV Corps Cavalry to the rear. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I've got many, many more that are waiting to be based or are undercoated and waiting for attention. Real life has a way of getting involved all too often sadly. I also recently bought a load of miniatures to represent one of the Saxon divisions with attached cavalry, but who wants to see a load of bare metal affixed to bases? I hope to get one more post in before I go away, so until then. </div>
